Approximately 70,000 Italian immigrants arrived in the Port of New Orleans between 1898 and 1929. They brought with them a yearning, a hunger for the things they valued: bread, respect, fortune, security, beauty, justice, and drama. Impoverished conditions in Sicily lead its people to respond to Louisiana planters’ pleas for workers, and the transported Sicilians were then able start new lives, rising quickly to become leaders in their communities.

“The study of regionalism,” writes anthropologist William R. Ferris, “is the study of the relation between people and the places in which they live.” This book explores the history of the area located in Louisiana’s “French triangle,” detailing the history of the people who migrated to the area, including the colonial French, Germans, Acadians, refugees from Santo Domingo, and immigrants from the French Revolution. Erath, chartered in 1899, typified many of the small rural towns in Louisiana. The first settlers moving to Erath arrived in 1781.

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita destroyed thousands of homes, schools, and businesses across the Gulf Coast and changed the face of southeast Louisiana forever. However, nearly a hundred miles northwest of New Orleans, in Lafayette, Louisiana, a different story was unfolding. As men, women, and children waited on their roofs for rescue, executive director Greg Davis hurried to prepare the Cajundome in Lafayette as an emergency shelter.
In the media storm that followed Hurricane Katrina in 2005, nursing home owners Sal and Mabel Mangano were vilified for allegedly causing the deaths of 35 residents of St. Rita’s Nursing Home in low-lying St. Bernard Parish. This book, written by the lawyer who defended them, reveals the gripping, true story behind the couple’s heartrending decision not to evacuate and their persecution at the hands of the government sworn to protect them.
Germans formed the largest foreign-speaking ethnic group of nineteenth-century Louisiana, larger than all the others combined. During the antebellum period, an estimated 12 percent of the New Orleans population was German, making the city the largest German colony below the Mason-Dixon line. Some later settlements moved upriver between New Orleans and Donaldsonville, near Lecompte, and in north Louisiana near Minden. Today, descendents of these immigrants make up over a fourth of the population. Hardcover.
