Philip Von Borries

With a career lasting more than four decades, Philip Von Borries has written and produced numerous award-winning magazine articles and television documentaries. He is one of the few sports journalists to receive both the Eclipse Award for thoroughbred racing and the John Hervey Award for harness racing coverage. His articles have appeared in more than three dozen publications, and each of his documentaries on the Kentucky Derby’s fabled black history earned national awards.

He has done extensive publicity for the Kentucky Derby, the Arlington Million, and many other sporting events, from researching historical and statistical information for media guides to lending his film and production skills to television coverage. In addition to working behind the scenes, Von Borries enjoys being on camera as well—he appeared as an extra in three horse racing-themed movies: Sylvester, Seabiscuit, and Dreamer.

Von Borries earned a BA in journalism from the University of Kentucky and is the author of numerous books on both thoroughbred racing and his second passion, baseball. He lives in Thoroughbred City, also known as Lexington, Kentucky.
