This comic book celebrates the two hundredth anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase, commemorating America’s best buy. It is the result of a blending of accurate research work in the field of American history with unexcelled craftsmanship in the field of cartoon art, as created by the nationally famous cartoonist John Chase.
Originally syndicated in strip form in many daily newspapers throughout the United States, this book is an outgrowth of America’s thirst for more knowledge of itself, depicted in a clearly understandable and easily read format and backed up by competent research. This delicate blending has been accomplished so ably by Mr. Chase that he has not only created a vehicle of exceptional educational value, but also produced a visual documentation of a period of America’s development that will remain ageless.

About the Author
John Chase received his first national attention as a cartoonist for the now-defunct New Orleans States-Item. Born and educated in New Orleans, except for art school at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, Chase was also an author, an illustrator for national periodicals and many books, and a popular public speaker—but only when he could not talk himself out of it, he says. Chase’s abilities as a historian, his facility with words, and his able craftsmanship particularly qualify him for this cartoon history, told in words and pictures. The story is historically accurate, but amusing and often downright funny—after all, it is a cartoonist who is telling this story. He had the first regular cartoon on television, which aired on WDSU in New Orleans starting in 1967. He served as president of the American Association of Editorial Cartoonists and is the author of five books, including Frenchmen, Desire, Good Children.
