Fonville Winans, a descendant of Louisiana’s French Creoles, is considered a premier photographer of Acadiana, and his work is widely known under his first name only. Many of his early black and white images record the lives and folkways of the Acadian people, a subject he pursued throughout his life. After attending Louisiana State University in the 1930s, he opened his own studio in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Born in Missouri in 1911, he traversed and photographed the bayou country for more than a decade during the 1920s and 1930s. Winans died in 1992 in Louisiana.
