Joan B. Garvey is a native New Orleanian with a passion for her hometown. Her love of the history of the Crescent City came from her famous ancestors, some of whom were active in New Orleans politics, one of whom served a Spanish King, and one of whom was an impresario for the French Opera before the Civil War. These relatives have entitled her to become a member of the Louisiana Colonials, which has further sparked her interest in the history of her home state. For her research on her book Beautiful Crescent: A History of New Orleans, Garvey received a research award from the University of New Orleans Phi Delta Kappa.
Garvey received her BA from Loyola University and a MA from the University of New Orleans. She went on to teach and serve as an administrator in the New Orleans Public School system for twenty years and simultaneously taught New Orleans History and Tour Guiding at the University of New Orleans Metro College. She has been a guide for Smithsonian Institute Southern Tours and has lectured on Louisiana history for the Louisiana Tourist Promotion Association, Friends of Cabildo, and various schools around the state. Garvey, a mother of seven and grandmother of twelve, lives with her husband, Walter, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
