“If I let my worries get to me, the world could pass me by. Well, I might try and fail sometimes, but I’ll never fail to try! I’ll take my chances. Come what may, I’m going to do it anyway.”
With a sentiment more adults would do well to follow, author Mark Burrows uses humorous experiences sometimes resulting in embarrassing disasters to encourage youngsters to take a chance in life. From science experiments that go horribly wrong to bike mishaps, sour notes, and timid questions, every day is filled with opportunities for failure—and ultimate growth—that shape a child’s worldview and character. Even grandma’s hugs outside of school, which could provide fodder for ridicule, are precious moments that are worth the effort! Illustrator Sally Springer uses a light touch and luminous colors to capture each excruciating moment. Together, words and images of familiar situations provide encouragement for the youngest of children.
