Noteworthy Events

Randy Romero’s induction into the racing Hall of Fame will take place on August 13 in Saratoga Springs, NY. The heroic story of his rise to the top can be found in Randy Romero’s Remarkable Ride ($25.00), by Bill Heller.

John E. Wade II, the editor of How to Achieve a Heaven on Earth ($19.95 pb), will give an hour-long interview on the radio program “Answers for the Family.” Nationally syndicated and broadcast by the Voice America Network,
the show will air at 5:00 pm CST on Wednesday, August 4.

Al Kennedy, author of Big Chief Harrison and the Mardi Gras Indians ($35.00) will be interviewed on WDSU-TV, Channel 6, New Orleans’ NBC affiliate. Airing August 2 at 8:30 am, the interview will support Kennedy’s
August 7 book signing at Stella Jones Gallery.

The Gulf Coast oil spill has affected some Pelican authors on a personal level. Jerald and Glenda Horst lived and worked with the Louisiana fishing community for years. Their Louisiana Seafood Bible Series ($25.00) includes in-depth interviews with commercial fishermen and their families, along with recipes many of them have provided. The books look at the industry of a particular seafood including history and operation.

Pelican’s publisher and the assistant to the publisher enjoyed a wonderful evening meal of Louisiana Seafood at Mosca’s Restaurant with the current class of interns. Crab Salad, Oysters Mosca, and Barbecued Shrimp, the restaurant’s signature dishes, were enjoyed by all. Good seafood is still possible in Louisiana.

David Davis has won the 2010 KidLit! Fellowship for Writing for Children and Young Adults, which was awarded by the Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow in Eureka Springs, AR. They announced that “Davis’s flair for storytelling is apparent in his highly acclaimed children’s books.”

Davis’s Jazz Cats ($15.95) was selected for the Accelerated Reader Program and was a finalist for the Texas Golden Spur Award. It was also named to the Children’s Top 100 List along with Ten Redneck Babies: A Southern Counting Book ($15.95). His other books, which KidLit! award committee members say, “contain words to set the imagination free,” include Texas Aesop’s Fables ($15.95), Texas Mother Goose ($16.99). Texas Zeke and the Longhorn ($15.95), Rock 'n' Roll Dogs ($15.95), Librarian's Night Before Christmas ($15.95), Redneck Night Before Christmas ($15.95), Trucker’s Night Before Christmas ($15.95), and his latest title, A Southern Child’s Garden of Verses ($16.99).

Note from the Publisher

The Sixty-eighth Doolittle Tokyo Raiders Reunion was held on April 16-18, 2010. The pilots who volunteered for a secret mission during WWII were the first to attack the Japanese mainland. The event went down in history as a classic example of heroism for American airmen. More of this amazing story is told in John Chandler Griffin’s biography Lt. Bill Farrow: Doolittle Raider ($24.95). Lt. Bill Farrow (beheaded by the Japanese) was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and earned the admiration and respect of a grateful nation. The 1942 raid provided a boost in morale for the American public during the dark days of the war.

These cakes I’ve decided are worth the calories.”
